North West Calligraphers

Workshop Introduction

If you’ve never been to a calligraphy workshop and are thinking of joining us, you may like to know a little about what goes on.

The Saturday workshops take place the Lyceum Building in the beautiful village of Port Sunlight. The Sunday workshops are in the stunning Cheshire countryside at Lower Withington Village Hall.

Our workshops begin at 10 am and finish at 4 pm and the current cost is £20 per day for members and £25 for non-members. There may also be a small additional charge for materials and photocopies.

Workshops are open to all members irrespective of the level of their calligraphic experience and skill. You are most welcome to attend any workshop to find out what we do, but if you are completely new to this art form our 'Introduction to Calligraphy’ sessions might be a great way for you to get started. Please feel free contact us for more information.

You will need a basic calligraphy ‘kit’ and if you are completely new to calligraphy, we can advise you about this. For some workshops, additional materials and equipment are required, details as provided by tutors of the relevant workshop. If you can’t get hold of a particular piece of equipment, someone will usually be able to help you out, or you may be able to buy the items at the workshop.

In most workshops, the tutor will demonstrate and then the members will attempt to emulate the demo! During the day, you may progress from working on the letter forms of a particular script to producing a finished piece, perhaps a favourite quotation in the script, by the end of the day. Everyone works at a different pace though, so there’s no pressure if you like to work more slowly. Some workshops aren’t script based at all and concentrate on aspects of design to enhance your calligraphy. Details of the content of each workshop can be found on this website.

Please bring a packed lunch, but tea, coffee and biscuits are available at a small charge throughout the day. If you have a favourite mug, you might like to bring that to use.

Do come and enjoy yourself!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
