Are you new to Calligraphy?
If you want to try calligraphy for the first time, or are just a bit rusty, our Introduction to Calligraphy course is the place to start, it runs three times a year alongside our main workshops. Please follow the Workshops link for up-to-date information.
You will be provided with ink, nib, pen holder and paper for the lessons which you’re welcome to buy so you can practise at home.
We recommend gathering together the kit below, handy for all of our workshops although some topics will need specialised materials and these will be listed under the workshop information.
- Long clear ruler marked in metric
- HB and H graphite pencils
- Eraser and sharpener
- Black, non-waterproof ink or gouache paint
- Range of nib sizes with an attached reservoir like Brause, Tape or Speedball
- Small paintbrush to load nibs
- A3 layout pad 80gsm
- A3 smooth cartridge paper 130gsm
- Glue stick
- MDF Board, or portable drawing board
- Removable tape
- Water pots and kitchen roll
Our course is hopefully resuming in October and will introduce you to core scripts like Foundational, Uncial, Italic and Gothic – the building blocks of many other calligraphic scripts.
You will learn about the history of the script, the correct angle to hold a pen and how to make the strokes to form the letters.
Our teachers are qualified adult education tutors and the classes are fun and informal.
