Are you new to Calligraphy?
If you want to try calligraphy for the first time, or are just a bit rusty, our Introduction to Calligraphy course is the place to start, at the moment it runs twice a year alongside our main workshops. Please follow the Workshops link for up-to-date information.
Getting Started
Each beginners workshop runs over 2 sessions and you will be given worksheets to take home.
On the day you will be provided with ink, nib, pen holder and paper for the lesson. You will also be able to purchase this equipment if you want to practise at home.
There is some basic equipment that you might have that will be helpful to bring along if you can.
- 30cm ruler
- HB pencil
- Eraser and sharpener
- Kitchen roll
Often people will come along to a lesson because they have received a calligraphy set as a gift, or bought one for themselves.
Please bring along any equipment that you may have as it may be useful. This might include:
- Nibs or pen holders
- Smooth watercolour or cartridge paper 130gsm (not cold pressed / NOT watercolour paper as its often too bumpy to write on)
- A portable drawing board

Course Details
Our courses will introduce you to core scripts like Foundational, Uncial, Italic and Gothic – the building blocks of many other calligraphic scripts.
You will learn about the history of the script, the correct angle to hold a pen and how to make the strokes to form the letters.
The classes are fun and informal.
